♞ Junior Chess Club - Frequently Asked Questions

1. What age range can join?

To join, children need to be between 7 and 14. We keep things flexible and group juniors by confidence and experience, so everyone can learn and play at a pace that suits them. 

2. Do juniors need to know how to play already?

No — complete beginners are welcome. We can teach them the basics so they’re ready to join in when they feel confident. 

3. When does the junior club meet?

The junior club normally meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month in Bridgwater.  

The club has now stopped for the summer and will resume in September.

Sessions take place at St George’s Parish Centre, Wembdon (TA6 7RR), from 6.15 PM to 7.15 PM.

4. Do parents need to stay during the session?

Parents are welcome to stay and watch in the hall, or simply return at the end of the session. 

5. Is coaching provided?

Yes — juniors get short lessons, puzzles, and guidance from experienced players. We focus on helping them improve at a comfortable pace while having fun 

6. Is there a membership fee?

Yes — fees are just £3 a session to help cover venue hire, equipment, and coaching. Full details are available on the club fees page.

♞ Adult Club - Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need to be experienced or rated?

All abilities are welcome — whether you’re just learning how the pieces move, sharpening your tactics, or dreaming of becoming the next grandmaster. Our adult club is friendly, relaxed, and open to anyone who enjoys over‑the‑board chess. 

2. When does the club meet?

The adult club meets on Monday evenings in Bridgwater. 

Sessions take place at St George’s Parish Centre, Wembdon (TA6 7RR), from 7.30 PM to 9.30 PM — or until around 10.30 PM on league nights. We also travel to different venues across Somerset for away league matches. 

3. Is there a membership fee?

Yes — the club has a small membership fee to help cover venue hire and league costs. If you’re new, we’re happy to explain it before you join, or you can check the details on the club fees page. 

4. Can I play in league matches?

Yes — Sedgemoor plays in the Somerset League, and new players can join a team once they’re comfortable and would like to take part. 

5. Why play over‑the‑board instead of just online? 

Over‑the‑board chess has a completely different feel to online play. You get proper, focused games without lag or distractions, and it’s just more enjoyable with a real board in front of you. It’s a more engaging way to play if you’re used to online chess and want real games with real people, not just a screen.
